Tablehurst Farm is looking for a part-time cook to work 24 hours a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Full details, including how to apply, are below.
Tablehurst Farm is a community-owned biodynamic and organic farm, vegetable garden, farm shop, café and small care home in Forest Row, East Sussex. The farm employs about 30 people and provides lunch for staff and volunteers six days a week. In addition to the staff lunch operation, there is a commercial kitchen preparing food products for sale in our shop and meals for sale in our café.
The current vacancy is for someone to cook the staff lunch three days a week, and to work in the commercial kitchen one day a week. This amounts to a total of around 24 hours a week spread across Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There is a bit of flexibility about total hours and when they are worked, but the majority of the work is necessarily in the mornings as lunch is served at 1.00pm.
Integrating with the care home
Our small care home looks after three adults with learning disabilities, all of whom sometimes work in our kitchens. Being willing to work alongside our care home residents is an integral part of this role.
Staff lunches at Tablehurst are substantial two-course meals, but they have to be prepared at low cost, using whatever ingredients are available each day. We are therefore looking for a confident cook who will work with all types of food and who has the ability to improvise. Experience of working in a commercial catering environment is desirable but not essential. Equally important is that you feel comfortable with the ideals and objectives of our community farm initiative. You can read more about these on our website.
Potential for a wider role
Over the next twelve months or so, we hope to extend the range of food products that we create from our farm produce, and this means that for the right candidate, there could be an opportunity for a wider role in due course, possibly up to full-time, five days a week.
The initial salary will be pro-rata to a full-time salary of £20,000. This means that for a 24 hour week, the actual starting salary would be £11,300.
