Cafe Manager Vacancy

This is an exceptional opportunity to join the core team of Tablehurst Community Farm in a pivotal role with excellent potential for future development.

Tablehurst Community Farm has been established in Forest Row for over 20 years. The farm rears animals and poultry for meat, and grows arable crops, fruit and vegetables. All our farming meets organic standards and wherever possible it is certified as biodynamic.

The main outlet for our farm produce is our farm shop, which is adjacent to the café and open six days a week. The shop also sells a range of bought-in organic produce including dairy products, eggs, bread and dry goods.

Our café is small but thriving, with a turnover of about £180,000 per annum. The main café operates six days a week throughout the year, and the café manager is also responsible for our “al fresco” kitchen which offers pizzas and barbecues during the summer months. At present, the al fresco kitchen operates on Fridays and Saturdays, but we hope to extend the service to other days.

The café offers hot and cold breakfasts, lunches, drinks and snacks. Some of the food is prepared in our registered kitchen and some in the café itself. Our aim is to offer food which is delicious, nutritious, suitable for a wide range of dietary needs and which celebrates the produce of the farm.

We are currently working on a site masterplan within which one of the highest priorities is to the create a larger indoor seating space for the café, so the operation is expected to grow in the coming months and years.

We are looking for an experienced café manager who can take charge of this operation. In addition to basic managerial, operational and food safety skills, the ideal candidate will have a deep interest in high quality food and a love of delivering really excellent customer service in a unique, community-focused environment. An interest in how we farm is also highly desirable, as the café manager is an ambassador for the whole enterprise.

This is a permanent, full-time position. Working hours are 8.00 to 17.30 five days a week including Saturdays. Our indicative salary  range for this role is £23,000 to £26,000 depending on experience, but we may be able to offer more for an exceptional candidate. We provide a contributory pension scheme, a free two course lunch every day, and a substantial staff discount in the shop and café.

To apply, send a CV and covering letter to The deadline for applications is Friday 8th February, Interviews may take place before this date, and we might make an appointment before the application deadline if a strong enough candidate comes forward.
